Superbug disrupts surgery at Greymouth hospital

Disruptions to the surgery schedule at Grey Base Hospital will continue this week while staff await results of testing for the superbug MRSA.

The hospital was forced to close its operating theatres on Friday after a visiting clinician was found to be a carrier of the antibiotic resistant bacteria.

A spokesperson for the West Coast District Health Board says the results of tests to determine whether theatre staff are free of MRSA are not expected to be available until mid-week.

Four operations scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed.

Mr Jamieson says no cross-infection has so far been detected amongst staff or patients.
