Changing tastes in literature may be the reason behind a drop in the retail price of books.
Recent Statistics New Zealand figures indicate the price of books fell by 14% in the March 2012 quarter.
Statistics New Zealand says a change in the types of books that make up the best-selling lists is partly responsible for the fall.
The index is based on the top10 adult novels, top 10 e-books and the top 10 children's titles, and the popularity of cheaper books makes a difference to the price of books overall.
Booksellers New Zealand chief executive Lincoln Gould says the drop may also be due to some publishers reducing their prices.
