Doctors say new laboratory firm has improved

Doctors say there's been a significant improvement in the service being provided by the new firm responsible for all medical diagnostic testing in the Auckland region.

Controversy surrounded the change a year ago from long-term provider Diagnostic Medlab Limited (DML) to Labtests for 29,000 blood tests and other tests a day.

Delays in reporting results and other problems sparked anger among family doctors and more than 160 complaints to the Health and Disability Commissioner.

Doctors say the service is now acceptable, although with fewer collection centres than they would like.

DML continues to provide 10% of the service. A review of the change is to be completed next month.
