The driver who won the last V8 Supercar race to be held in Hamilton says it is crucial for the sport that there continue to be a New Zealand round of the event

Ford driver Mark Winterbottom said all V8 Supercar drivers love racing in New Zealand.

He says the crowds are great supporters of the event and this country has a massive motorsport heritage.

Hamilton City Council lost $37 million on the race over three years and last year decided to end its contract with V8 Supercars.

There is speculation the race may return to the Pukekohe track in future.

V8 Supercars Australia says it wants to continue racing here and is investigating all possible venues. A decision is likely before July.
