Police have named a German tourist who died after being hit by a train in Christchurch.

He was Erik Ruben Maurer, 20, who had been working in New Zealand since October last year.

Police say Mr Maurer was struck by a train heading towards Lyttelton, just east of Ensors Road, about 12.30am on Sunday.

It is believed he was returning home from a party in the suburb of Waltham and there are reports that he was seen lying on train tracks.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances at this stage and the matter has been referred to the coroner.
