The New Zealand Rugby Union says it is doing everything it can to keep former All Blacks assistant coach and current Chiefs assistant Wayne Smith in New Zealand.

Mr Smith is considering an offer to become the England backs coach and has given himself 10 days to make a decision.

NZRU chief executive Steve Tew says Mr Smith has been very open with them about what he has been offered.

Mr Tew says the NZRU consider him an important asset to the game in New Zealand and will not leave him without options to consider. He did not say what these options are.
