5:31 pm on 29 April 2012

Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt has broken the world record for the longest television interview.

Screening on the freeview channel CUE TV , Mr Shadbolt and interviewer Tom Conroy spent 26 hours on air, eclipsing the previous record of 12 hours set in 2009 in Spain.

It could also be the longest one-on-one interview on any medium and the longest single television event broadcast in New Zealand.

An official adjudicator from Guinness World Records was at the studio to verify the record.

Mr Shadbolt says he was never lost for words and he has a lot of stories to tell which is one of the advantages of being an old age pensioner.

The interview raised more than $10,000 for St John Ambulance.
