Protest against sand mining

2:10 pm on 29 April 2012

A protest was held in Hamilton on Sunday to draw attention to plans for sand mining off the west coast of the North Island.

Police estimate about 200 people attended a march on Victoria Street, as part of a hikoi against the sale of State assets and resources to foreign investors.

The hikoi began on Tuesday at Cape Reinga and will finish in Wellington.

Organisers say sand prospecting licenses could allow sand from the sea bed to be disturbed between the low tide mark and 200 nautical miles offshore.
