Plans for one of New Zealand's leading medal sports at this year's London Olympics have been thrown into disarray with the cancellation of the Badminton Horse Trials in England because of heavy rain.
Badminton is one of the key events in the equestrian calendar and for some New Zealand riders it was a make or break opportunity to force their way into the Olympic squad.
Although double gold medalist and defending Badminton champion Mark Todd's position in the team remains secure, the cancellation is an issue for other New Zealanders such as Caroline Powell, Jock Paget and Joenelle Richards who needed to perform well there to impress the New Zealand Olympic selectors.
Mark Todd told Morning Report the cancellation is a major thing, equivalent to calling off the Wimbledon tennis championships.
He says the horses he was to ride this week will now compete in France later this month.
