Govt considers single supplier for diabetes equipment

Health Minister Tony Ryall says no final decisions have been made about changes to the equipment supplied to diabetics through the Government's drug-buying agency.

About 100 protesters rallied outside Parliament on Tuesday against Pharmac's proposal to move to a single supplier for blood glucose meters and test strips.

The proposal to use Pharmaco NZ Ltd's CareSens products is estimated to save $10 million a year.

Diabetes New Zealand says up to 150,000 of the country's 200,000 diabetics use blood glucose meters and many will have to replace or upgrade them.

Inside Parliament, Mr Ryall was asked by the Labour Party whether he would ask Pharmac to reconsider the proposal.

Mr Ryall says the agency is considering the results of extensive consultation and that process should be left to run its course.

Pharmac wants to do the best it can for people with diabetes, but there is limited funding in the health budget, the minister says.
