Overseas tourists spent $6.2 billion in New Zealand in the year to June, with Australian and British visitors the biggest spenders.

The Ministry of Tourism says this is an almost 5% increase on the previous year.

Tourism research manager Bruce Bassett says Australian visitors spent $1.7 billion and British visitors $1 billion.

Mr Bassett says the numbers prove the industry is able to weather tougher economic times.

He says drops in spending were recorded by American, Chinese, Taiwanese, German and Canadian visitors.
