A couple came to the aid of a distressed woman in Hamilton who told them she had been sexually assaulted.
Police say the couple came across the woman just before 7am on Friday near the intersection of Victoria Street and Bryce Street.
They stayed with the woman and called the police.
Police cordoned off an area in Hood Street off to allow a preliminary forensic examination to be carried out.
They hoped to interview the woman on Friday.
