Inquiry into fatal race crash

Motorcyling New Zealand will hold an inquiry into the death of a motorbike racer at a track meeting in Feilding on Saturday

A man, 45, was killed and another man, 53, was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after a collision at the Manfield track.

They belonged to the Victoria Motorcycle Club, which was holding the first of its winter series meetings.

Police say the dead man's family was at the track, watching him race. His name will be issued on Sunday after his wider family has been informed.

Motorcycling NZ says the inquiry could take months to complete. The police serious crash unit is also investigating.

The Victoria Motorcycle Club has declined to comment.

Racing was postponed after the accident, but the two-day meeting was expected to resume on Sunday.

The Victoria Motorcycle Clubis involved mainly in road racing, miniature road racing, track and training days, but its premier event is a winter series held at Manfeild.

VMCC vice president Andrew Presant confirms the man who died was a club member.
