Tasmania's Conservation Trust has written to New Plymouth district councillors about a possibly destructive forest cull proposed by a company owned by a council subsidiary.
The trust says the company, which is majority-owned by the council's Tasman Farms, wants to cut down a large area of native forest in northern Tasmania to make way for dairy expansion.
A conservation trust spokesperson, Peter McGlone, says the group has written to the council and the Van Diemens Land Company (VDLC), which is owned by Tasman Farms, several times, but the responses have been unsatisfactory - so now they hope to start a dialogue with the councillors.
The trust says it is not opposed to the expansion, but it needs to go ahead with the least possible impact on the environment.
VDLC says it will only proceed if all aspects of sustainability are approved by independent regulatory authorities.
