Police could use tasers to quell prison riots

5:54 am on 20 September 2008

Corrections Minister Phil Goff says police officers armed with tasers could be used to control prison riots in the future.

Mr Goff says the armed offenders squad is currently used to deal with extreme situations, but the Corrections Department is working with the prison officers' union to improve the safety of officers.

He says once tasers are introduced it is likely they would be used in prisons because they are not lethal.

Earlier in the week, two officers were badly beaten by five inmates at Rimutaka prison near Wellington.
