The Corrections Department says more than half the prison population is now in employment or training.
Inmates are paid between 20c and 60c an hour for their work, earning the maximum amount if their job includes training towards NZQA-accredited qualifications.
Corrections hopes job training will help reduce the 42% recidivism rate among prisoners during the first year of their release.
