Police have named a Christchurch boy who was found dead in a carpark on Saturday after it is believed he had been sniffing butane.

He was Darius Logan Claxton, aged 12.

Police understand he had been with others who had been sniffing butane from a canister.

Detective Sergeant Earle Borrell says they have identified the store where it is believed the butane was bought and have spoken to the owners.

It has not yet been determined whether any charges can be laid in relation to the sale.

The boy's death has been referred to the coroner and post-mortem will be carried out on Monday.
