Facebook warning

9:03 pm on 10 May 2012

The Privacy Commissioner is sounding a warning about the information people put on Facebook, with anecdotal evidence employers are asking for access to personal pages.

Marie Shroff says there have been reports overseas of employers demanding access to their prospective workers' Facebook pages.

She says there is anecdotal evidence that it is also happening here.

Ms Shroff says an employer demanding access to a person's Facebook page is similar to them asking to see a person's letters or photographs, and they should be challenged about why they want that access.

Ms Shroff was appearing before Parliament's justice and electoral committee on Thursday for her office's annual review.
