New figures show New Zealand's population grew by 0.6% in the year to March and now stands at 4,430,400 people.

Statistics New Zealand says the growth rate is the lowest for a March year since 2001, when the population increased by 0.5%,

There were 31,000 more births than deaths during the 12-month period, but there was a net migration loss of 3400.

There are now more than 600,000 people over the age of 65 and Statistics New Zealand estimates that in the next 40 years the number of those aged over 80 will go past half a million.
