MetService has lifted a strong wind warning in Wellington and Wairarapa on Wednesday afternoon as gusts of up to 110km around hill areas begin to ease.

However, it says drivers should continue to be cautious on roads such as the Rimutaka Hill Road as the winds die down.

Met Service has also lifted a heavy rain warning for the Westland and Buller ranges, along with wind and rain warnings in Otago and the eastern side of the South Island.
