Maui pipeline rupture caused by landslip

A technical report confirms that a rupture of the Maui gas pipeline in October last year was caused by a landslip.

The outage lasted for five days and deprived many industries of gas for energy for factory production.

The accident happened in the Pukearuhe region of inland Taranaki.

A report into the accident was commissioned by the owners of the pipeline, Maui Development Ltd.

It says a section of the 307km-long pipeline failed due to sudden overload caused by landslide movement.

There was no problem with the strength of the pipe itself.
