Police station menu doesn't go down well

A Wairarapa man says he was kept in a cell at the Masterton police station for almost 48 hours at the weekend and given only milo and cold instant noodles.

Callum Mahupuku was arrested in Masterton for breaching bail conditions on Saturday evening and released on Monday afternoon.

The 20-year-old says he had to ask several times for a drink of milo and was given only flavourless noodles in cold water to eat.

"I seen it and I was like, 'Mate, these are cold and have no flavouring'. One of the officers came up and goes, 'I'll go check it out' and walked off but didn't come back.

"So, I thought, I'm not going to eat this, so I just sat it there and went back to sleep."

Masterton police say Mr Mahupuku refused weet-bix for breakfast and say they are not in the habit of providing prisoners with substantial meals.

Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr says people are never in police cells for very long and is satisfied that the food offered is adequate.
