Police say they are bemused by the international media attention that four mysterious packages sent to Greymouth residents from Paris has received.

The packages containing either a hairdryer, or hair clippers, and a handwritten thank you note with cash have turned up in the past week.

Police say the parcels were addressed to the children of those who lived at the properties they were sent to, but those children are now in their 20s and have left home.

The senders all have English names and their addresses and phone numbers have turned out to be fake.

The hair appliances have been checked in case they contain drugs, but none has been found.

The story has been picked up by news media around the world, including Britain, Australia and the United States.
