Waikato SPCA is calling for a curfew on cats so that animals are kept indoors from dawn to dusk to protect them from disease and injury.
It is making the proposal as part of its submission to the Hamilton City Council's draft long-term plan and is also calling for permits for cat-owners, microchipping and registration.
A spokesperson for the Waikato SPCA, Michelle Locke, says a cat curfew is already in place in several states of Australia and provides a range of benefits.
She says the curfew would stop the spread of disease and help keep cats safe from harm.
Ms Locke says other benefits include stopping cats hunting native birds and keeping the cat population in check.
