A homicide inquiry has been launched after a man was stabbed to death in Auckland's central business district.

The businessman, who worked in the BNZ tower, died about 5.30pm on Thursday outside the building on Mills Lane.

Police say the man was helping a woman who had asked him to call police after she had been assaulted by an armed man near the lifts in the BNZ tower.

He was then stabbed.

Witnesses say the man walked out from the building and asked a construction worker for help. He then lay down and started bleeding from the mouth.

Bystanders and paramedics tried hard to revive him, but failed.

About an hour after the incident, distraught family members of the dead man including a man, a woman and three teenagers arrived at the scene.

They were visibly upset, with one man trying to break through the police cordon. They were comforted by officers.
