A businessman who was fatally stabbed in the Auckland City CBD had been trying to help a woman who had just been assaulted.

A homicide inquiry is underway following the man's death in Mills Lane.

Police say he was leaving the BNZ tower just before 5.30pm on Thursday, when a woman who also worked in the building asked him to call 111.

She had been assaulted by an armed man near the lifts.

The businessman was then stabbed. Covered in blood, he walked outside to ask for help from a nearby construction worker, before collapsing on the street.

Bystanders and paramedics tried hard to revive him, but were unable to do so.
