Otara group loses legal battle with Auckland Council

A group that for decades ran the community centre hosting the Otara markets has lost a court battle over its contract with the Auckland Council.

Te Puke O Tara Incorporated Society ran the Otara Community Centre for nearly 40 years before it had its contract terminated last month.

Auckland Council ended the $80,000 contract after community members voted no confidence in the board causing it to disband.

Te Puke O Tara asked the High Court to grant it the right to keep running the centre but the court rejected the request.

Auckland Council is temporarily running the centre and says all programmes and the markets will continue operating as normal.
