Free off-peak travel under Gold Card

10:49 am on 26 September 2008

Holders of a SuperGold card will be able to access free off-peak public transport in most regions from next week.

The card was introduced last year as part of the Government's agreement with New Zealand First.

Prime Minister Helen Clark says more than 500,000 people aged over-65 and pensioners with the discount card will be eligible from 1 October.

Funding amounting to $72 million is being provided over four years for off-peak travel for card holders.

However, the Northland, Taranaki and Marlborough regions will not be ready to roll out the free travel until November.
