A search for a man and one of his children who are still missing after falling from their dinghy in Manukau Harbour has been halted for the night.

Police say the father and his four children fell into the water at about 2pm on Sunday and were swept along by the current.

Two people jumped off the bridge to try and rescue the group when they saw them struggling underneath the Mangere Bridge.

Emergency services managed to pull only three of the four children from the water.

They are all in Middlemore Hospital, where a two-year-old is in critical condition.

The other two children in hospital are aged nine and 10.

The two rescuers were also winched to safety and taken in for treatment.

The missing boy is aged seven.

Before calling off the search at sunset, the Westpac helicopter and a police search and rescue squad focused their efforts on the coastline towards the Manukau Heads, where they believe the two missing people will have been swept.

The search will resume on at 7am on Monday.
