A man at the centre of a rescue operation on Sunday morning was in reasonably good spirits when emergency services reached him, despite being trapped in a truck for ten hours.

The 47-year-old lost control of the truck, which crashed down a bank in the Avon Valley area of Marlborough at about 9pm on Saturday.

He wasn't discovered until just after 7am on Sunday and was treated for minor injuries.

Rescue crews were also involved in a separate crash early on Sunday in which a nine-year-old boy was killed.

The boy was a passenger in a truck travelling north from Christchurch which crashed into a bridge at Iron Gate Stream, 10 kilometres north of Kaikoura.

The driver suffered moderate injuries.
