1:28 pm on 28 September 2008

The police say a weekend drink-driving blitz in West Auckland found 74 motorists driving with excess breath alcohol.

More than 13,000 vehicles were processed at checkpoints across Waitakere suburbs between Friday evening and early Sunday morning.

Nineteen people were arrested for a variety of offences, including failing to appear in court.

Twenty vehicles were impounded or seized and 14 drivers had their licences suspended.

Eighteen of the 74 drivers found to have excess breath alcohol elected to have blood tests taken and will find out shortly if they too will face court proceedings.
