Fisheries officers need batons and pepper spray - union

5:13 pm on 28 September 2008

The union representing fisheries officers says it is disappointing they do not have access to pepper spray and batons.

Fisheries officers have been campaigning for the right to carry the weapons for almost a decade, and the National Union of Public Employees had hoped Parliament would pass a law allowing that.

It says the officers' ability to do their jobs is being hindered by the fact that they cannot defend themselves in dangerous situations.

The union organiser, Martin Cooney, says it would have meant the officers could do a better job and the union will be campaigning for political support to change the law after the election.
