Auckland University of Technology is playing a key role in monitoring a rocket as it heads to the International Space Station.

SpaceX, which launched the craft on Tuesday, is the first private company to send a supply ship to the station.

The task of keeping track of it has been contracted to the Auckland University of Technology, which is using a radio telescope 12 metres in diameter to monitor the craft.

AUT radio astronomer Sergei Gulyaev says New Zealand is a very good location from which to monitor the rocket.
