Government relaxes red tape over DIY projects

10:35 am on 30 September 2008

In a U-turn, the Government has decided to reduce the red tape requiring DIY enthusiasts to get building consents for many home renovation projects.

Under the changes, builders and homeowners will no longer need consent for installing windows, making changes to exisiting plumbing or building a sleepout.

Building and Construction Minister Shane Jones says the Building Act was tightened after an overreaction to the leaky homes saga, but that should not mean more bureaucracy for homeowners wanting to do renovations.

Changes to the Building Act will come into effect on 16 October.
