Dunedin's Carisbrook given top heritage status

Dunedin's Carisbrook Stadium has been registered by the Historic Places Trust, and given the highest possible status of Category 1.

The trust reserves Category 1 for places that have special or outstanding cultural heritage significance and value.

Otago-Southland area manager Owen Graham says the Dunedin City Council opposed the registration out of concern that it could restrict redevelopment options if a new stadium is built in the city.

However, Mr Graham says the registration itself does not offer any protection to Carisbrook.

He says there is plenty of scope for sympathetic redevelopment, as the registration mainly applies to the playing field and the Turnstile Building.
