More young people involved in the arts

Creative New Zealand says more young people than ever before are becoming involved in the arts.

A survey by the agency suggests 85% of New Zealanders were involved in the arts last year.

A quarter of the 2500 people surveyed were aged between seven and 14.

Creative NZ says four out of five young people like to be creative in their spare time and would rather spend time on art than play computer games or watch television.

Overall, almost three quarters of those who attended a Maori arts event last year were not Maori and more than half who attended the Pacifica festivals, were Pakeha.
