Wheelie bins seen as way to reduce waste

An Auckland Council member says replacing rubbish bags with wheelie bins throughout most of the region will help cut waste.

The council will decide next week if it will adopt a recommendation to implement a user-pays system, under which residents will be charged for the amount of rubbish they dispose of.

This would take effect in 2015 and would reduce domestic waste per person by an estimated 30% within three years.

Cr Richard Northey says rubbish bags will encourage residents to reduce what they throw out.
