Police seek car sightings in Wanganui killing

5:59 am on 7 October 2008

The police in Wanganui are calling for sightings of a Mitsubishi Galant as they investigate what they say was a random killing in the city 11 days ago.

The occupants of the vehicle are said to have caused disturbances at parties across the city before and after the attack in Castlecliff.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Anstiss says Paul Kumeroa, 28, was walking home from a party at 9.30pm on Tuesday, 23 September, when he was assaulted - apparently for no reason.

He later died of head injuries in Wanganui Hospital.

Mr Anstis says the attackers were driving a silver Mitsubishi Galant, which was found burnt out near the beach a day after the attack.

He says it appears those in the car were drunk.

The police are investigating two altercations in downtown Wanganui and others in the suburbs of Gonville and Castlecliff.

Mr Kumeroa left behind a partner of 11 years and an 18-month-old son.
