Investigation into supermarket specials welcomed

Consumer New Zealand has welcomed an investigation into the pricing of specials at supermarkets owned by Progressive Enterprises

The Commerce Commission launched the investigation after complaints that Countdown supermarkets may be misleading shoppers with specials tags which might not represent a saving.

Chief Executive of Consumer New Zealand Sue Chetwin says the organisation received dozens of responses to details posted on its Facebook page of a Countdown special on Purina dog food which turned out to be the normal price.

She says Countdown says it was a simple error.

But she says she knows this also happens at other supermarkets, and the Commerce Commission's investigation is timely.

Ms Chetwin says supermarkets should have systems in place to ensure specials are genuine and that mistakes do not happen.
