Consumers likely to meet costs of new law

Consumers are being warned they are likely to bear the cost of a new law to reduce waste going to landfills.

The Waste Minimisation and Resource Recovery Act will require manufacturers and importers of certain products to provide plans for their disposal.

Demolition waste, green waste, computers and appliances are likely to be designated as so-called priority products requiring disposal plans.

Jo Knight, the Chief Executive of the organisation Zero Waste, says the cost of disposal is likely to be met through a levy on products, with a similar scheme already working well in countries such as Japan.

She says the result should be a substantial reduction in waste.
