Victoria University in Wellington is to raise its tuition fees next year.

The university council on Monday agreed that undergraduate students will pay an extra 5%.

Fees for most post-graduate students will increase by $500.

The council says the money will allow the university to continue to offer a wide range of support services, including accommodation and employment.

Victoria University Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Tim Beaglehole, says the council regrets the increases, but financial realities made them necessary.
