Private prison facing another fine

10:22 pm on 6 June 2012

New Zealand's only private prison operator could again be in line for a big fine, following another escape under its watch.

Serco has confirmed one of its Mt Eden inmates escaped on Sunday afternoon.

The Auckland District Health Board says the prisoner had undergone an eye procedure at the Greenlane Clinical Centre and ran off while being escorted back to a vehicle.

The man was recaptured about 30 minutes later.

Serco says it is investigating how the escape occurred, given that the prisoner was secured and under guard by two staff.

Earlier this year, in line with Serco's contract, it was fined $150,000 for a breakout by inmate Aaron Forden.
