Doubt over ban on killers having more children

Criminal lawyer Lorraine Smith doubts that New Zealand courts would want to get involved in issuing orders to parents convicted of serious child assault or murder to be prevented from having more children.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett raised that prospect this week, saying it was being considered by the Cabinet, as well as a ban on violent or abusive men from living or working with children.

Ms Smith told Morning Report on Friday it is not necessary for the Government to legislate because Child, Youth and Family already has those responsibiliies.

She said the department already removes 150 children and infants from the worst offenders every year.
