A North-South rugby match has raised only a fraction of the amount expected by Dunedin City Council.
The match at Forsyth Barr stadium on Sunday was organised to repay some of the money used to help save the Otago Rugby Football Union union from liquidation.
In March, Dunedin City council and events management company agreed to write off rugby union debt of $480,000 and said it expected the North-South match to raise at least $200,000.
But the income is likely to be about one tenth of that, after a crowd of only 7427 turned up for the match.
The match was the first North-South fixture since 1995 but was scheduled the day after an All Black test and in the middle of university exams.
Dunedin mayor Dave Cull says he would have liked some bigger names in the teams, but the council will take what it can get.
