The Wellington City Council has laid off six workers and is looking at cutting a further 30 jobs as part of a major restructuring.
The job losses are in the works department and the council is also considering cuts at its 12 libraries and housing and public health departments.
Six drainage workers have lost their jobs, and 30 more employees could be handed redundancy notices in the next week.
Their work is to be contracted out to Citycare, a company owned by the Christchurch City Council, which also does contract work for the Wellington council including property maintenance.
Wellington City Council says the move will help save money, although it can't say exactly how much.
Jobs at its 12 libraries are also on the line, as well as at the council's smaller social housing and public health departments.
The council says the restructure is a move towards sharing more services with other councils in the region.
Public Service Association national secretary Brenda Pilott says she understands the council wants to trim about $850,000 from the council's library budget and both services and jobs could be casualties.
Ms Pilott says the council needs to say where it will make cuts.
