South Island youth programme gets nod

7:22 pm on 11 June 2012

The Government has given initial approval to a youth transition service in the South Island threatened with closure following funding changes.

The Work' n it Out programme covering the southern half of the South Island has won the initial right to run the service.

Tender documents state that all new youth services can only target 16- and 17-year-olds and their funding will depend on their success at getting disengaged youth through NCEA level 2.

Work' n it Out general manager Doug Reid says it is only an initial agreement and negotiations will begin with the Ministry of Social Development next week.
