Auckland International Airport Ltd says a new international terminal pier will open later this month, in time for the world's largest jet to park there.
The company says the $50 million development will allow it to accommodate a projected 25 million passengers a year by 2025.
Auckland International Airport is the only airport in New Zealand that can host the super jumbo A380 jet.
Qantas flew one of the jets over Auckland for a promotional flight over the city on Friday. Large crowds turned out to see the aircraft.
The airline has ordered 20 A380s.
Emirates will be the first airline to operate a daily service from Auckland on the A380 from February next year.
