A man who kidnapped and beat his ex-girlfriend has been sent to jail for eight years and six months.

Nathan Boulter abducted Nortessa Montgomerie on Great Barrier Island in January last year.

He beat and strangled her and dragged her across the island for 38 hours, as well as assaulting her new boyfriend.

The judge the High Court in Auckland on Wednesday described the offending as brutal and callous.

Ms Montgomerie wept as she told the court that the incident had had a devastating effect on her life.

She said she has been left with physical scars and is still traumatised by her ordeal.
