An Auckland police manager says the sale of fake Ecstasy pills is a growing problem which could lead to someone dying.
Counties Manukau Police recently seized 420 of the pills, believed to contain the drugs 4-MEC and MDPV, along with methamphetamine which had a street value of over $300,000.
Last year, Middlemore hospital experienced an influx of drug users acting so violently they needed sedation. They had taken what they thought was Ecstasy.
Counties Manukau acting crime manager Inspector Gary Hill says drug dealers are selling the pills as Ecstasy, but they don't contain the drug's main ingredient MDMA.
He says the fake pills are very dangerous because people don't know what they are taking.
