An elderly man seriously injured after being gored by a bull near Masterton is in a stable condition on Thursday night.

Police say the 79-year-old was helping unload cattle from a stock truck at a farm near Masterton when the bull attacked him in the afternoon.

The bull repeatedly charged at him and other farm workers until they got it out of the yard.

It was shot by an officer after it charged at a police vehicle.

The farm worker was flown to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.

A hospital spokesperson said the man has undergone surgery and is in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.
